From the parking lot, you can reach the entrance to the castle complex after a short walk. All three castles are directly connected to each other.
Ahead of you lie many steps, but also impressive views of the Palatinate Forest. You can explore the castle on your own. Please keep a close eye on the children, as the castle is not fully secured.
Sandstone castles
The castle complex dates back to the 11th century and consists of Grafendahn, Altdahn, and Tanstein castles, which stretch lengthwise across a massive rock. As is typical for castles in this region, passageways and chambers were hewn into the soft sandstone. Numerous staircases connect the castles. Several towers, walls, and gatehouses remain, offering excellent views of the castles from the observation towers.
Castle tavern and opening hours
The castle tavern is also located on the castle grounds and is open from April to October. The castle itself is not open year-round. In particular, the castle remains closed during the winter months of December and January.
Hike to the castle viewpoint
For those who would like to do a bit more hiking, I recommend the short path to the Burgenblick viewpoint, which offers a beautiful view of the castles you've already climbed and a picnic area. The path is suitable for strollers. At the castle itself, you'll need to leave your stroller at the entrance.
