Drachenfels Castle is idyllically situated on the edge of the forest near Busenberg. You can hike the beautiful Drachenfels Trail or drive directly to the parking lot of the nearby Drachenfels Hut in Busenberg.
Only 400m to the castle
From there it's only about 400 meters to the castle, but the path is steep. You'll need to leave your stroller at the castle entrance, as it's only accessible via stairs.
As the castle ruins are being restored in sections, occasional closures are possible. If the castle gate is open, you can explore the castle. Drachenfels Castle is a typical Palatinate castle: built on a rocky plateau and offering breathtaking 360-degree views of the surrounding Dahner Felsenland (Dahn Rock Country). Long staircases carved into the rock lead up to the impressive viewpoint. You can explore the castle's rooms and chambers at your own risk.
Attention: Do not confuse this with the Drachenfels near Bad Dürkheim!
Did a dragon really live here once?
Look around – you can discover a carved image of a dragon in the wall of the former knight's room. And many smaller ones: lizards feel very much at home on the warm sandstone. How many did you spot?
The Palatinate Forest Association's hut is a great place to stop for refreshments. The playground is huge and directly visible.
