2 easy ways

There are two easy and short paths leading to Wachtenburg Castle, neither of which are suitable for strollers. Both involve climbing some stairs. The total distance is approximately 2 kilometers.

To Wachtenburg via the wine and sparkling wine trail

Starting here on the Odinstalweg trail, you'll pass the most beautiful vineyard viewpoint. The path winds to the right along an asphalt road before turning right again. Steps lead you up to the terraced vineyard, and from there you'll approach Wachtenburg Castle from the rear.

To Wachtenburg via Schlossgasse

Wachenheim is a really lovely little village, and you can stroll through the narrow streets beforehand before taking Schlossgasse to the steps leading up to Wachtenburg Castle. The turnoff is well signposted and impossible to miss.

Observation tower for even more views

The keep is easily accessible via a modern staircase. However, be warned – it's not suitable for those with a fear of heights, and children must be accompanied by an adult. Climbing to the viewing platform at the top is definitely worthwhile, though. The view is breathtaking.

More action

The tour to Wachtenburg can be wonderfully combined with a visit to the fantastic playground and pump track in Wachenheim. The Wachenheim outdoor swimming pool is also located next to the playground.

Stop for refreshments at Wachtenburg Castle

The castle tavern offers a wide selection of food and drinks and is open from Wednesday to Sunday. Wachtenburg Castle itself is open year-round, independent of the tavern. A cozy fire crackles in the large dining room, while outside you can soak up plenty of sunshine on the spacious terrace. The stunning view of the Rhine plain is an added bonus.

Castle Museum

A small castle museum offers insights into the history of this historically significant place dating back to the 12th century. For example, it features a model of the castle depicting its medieval appearance.

Barrier-free access

People with physical disabilities can drive up to the castle. They need a permit from the tourist information office in Wachenheim. The castle is not fully accessible, but the castle tavern is reachable.

Hikers' toilet

The hikers' toilet is available 24/7 at the top of the castle. Brilliant!
