Gentle nature experience in the Donnersberg district

The Gruffalo is coming back

The Erdekaut nature reserve is a renaturalized marshland where clay was formerly mined. Information panels, a small playground, sheep, and a mining museum now stand where hard work once took place.

Circular route through the Erdekaute

The term "adventure landscape" might be a little misleading here. While there are plenty of animal species like dragonflies, sheep, ducks, and frogs for nature-loving kids to discover in spring and summer, the experience is rather gentle. The best way to slow down is on the approximately 2 km long circular path that starts behind the clay pit and leads you along boardwalks past several small lakes. You can also take a stroller here; you'll just need to lift it briefly at the beginning and end of the boardwalks.

The researcher's question, " Is the pond clear or murky? ", can spice up the tour, because it contains a really cool fact: If the water is clear, the clay was mined underground. If the water is rather murky, the mining took place above ground. The remaining sediment is what makes the water cloudy.

Mining Museum

The mining museum is only rarely open. You can take a virtual tour beforehand or look inside from the outside. There you can see the large mine cage, which was used to lift green clay from a depth of 50 meters until 1996.

Playground and animals

Around the Erdekaut landscape, you'll find small play areas: sometimes a slide, sometimes spring riders, or you can admire the grazing sheep and goats. They always have babies in the spring and are sure to provide an "awww" moment ;-)

Nearby combination options

Eiswoog Ramsen

At Eiswoog in Ramsen, the Stumpfwaldbahn starts its tours on weekends via historic tracks - great to combine with the circular route around the Woog.
