  • Hohe List hike

Great views and a nice children's playground This 4.5 km long circular hike over the Krappenfels and the Christkindlfelsen delights with great views, moderate altitude gains and a cozy place to stop for refreshments – perfect for a relaxing family day in nature. FACTS Price: free Weather: dry weather Age: from kindergarten age Dogs: allowed, must be kept on a leash Location: Eppenbrunn The hike at a glance The circular hike (approx. 4.5 km) leads along wide, easily walkable paths through the Palatinate Forest. With an elevation gain of around 100 meters, it is also easily manageable for younger children. ✔️ Suitable for strollers , even if there are some steeper inclines along the way. ✔️ Great playground ✔️ Ideal for families with kindergarten and primary school children For kids who are good runners, the tour can even be extended to the Altschlossfelsen – a real natural highlight! The tour in detail You start at the "Wasserscheide" hiking parking lot in Eppenbrunn. You can find the direct link to directions below . From there, cross the main road and take the forest path on the left. It leads you into the forest through a bend, and the Kappenfelsen (Cap Rock) is signposted. Follow the path until the trail to the Kappenfelsen is signposted. It leads you to the viewpoint and a small group of benches. Following the same path, you'll rejoin the main trail after the viewpoint and continue on to the Christkindlfelsen (Christ Child Rock). This path is also signposted. From here, it's just a few meters to the Hohe List. The playground is already visible. For the return journey, follow the narrower path marked with the Eulenfels tour symbol. This will lead you back to the parking lot. You can find a detailed tour plan here - you can download the GPX data here: Krappenfels & Christkindlfelsen – Views with an adventure factor Both rocks offer beautiful views of the Palatinate Forest and invite you to take a short break. Traditionally, children's wishes for the Christkind hang on the Christkindlfelsen rock – especially during Advent, the hike is therefore a very atmospheric experience. ⚠️ Important for families: There is a risk of falling from the rocks. Small holes, unsecured areas, and barriers that are not childproof require constant supervision . However, the tour is quite manageable with attentive parents. Stop at the PWV hut Hohe List A major advantage of this hike is the cozy stop at the PWV hut Hohe List . 🍽️ Simple Palatinate cuisine 📅 Open Saturday and Sunday 🐶 Dogs allowed 🪑 Limited indoor seating – better to plan for outdoor seating if the weather is nice Especially convenient: Right next to the cabin is a new playground (opening Easter 2025) with fantastic play equipment, plenty of space to run around, and spacious seating areas. Parents can easily keep an eye on their children and enjoy a relaxing break. 📍 Planning tips for families Route: 4.5 km circular route Elevation gain: approx. 100 m Duration: approximately 1–2 hours including breaks Stroller: suitable for those with a reasonable level of fitness; should be suitable for outdoor use. Best time of year: Beautiful all year round, especially charming during Advent. This family-friendly hike in the Palatinate Forest combines nature, views, a playground and a stop at a mountain hut – a thoroughly enjoyable day trip for young and old. More pictures Directions

  • The best chestnut collecting spots

WHERE CAN YOU COLLECT CHESTNUTS IN THE PALATINATE? In the Palatinate, the sweet chestnut is considered widespread - we even have a dedicated hiking trail for it: the Palatinate Chestnut Trail - a mere 60 km long. In this article, I have compiled the best collection points for sweet chestnuts that fans and chestnut experts in the Palatinate region have told me about. In addition, there are 15 destinations that you can perfectly combine with collecting chestnuts. "We were in the Meisental this weekend!" by Kathrin R. "In Busenberg. Take the forest path towards Drachenfelshütte." from Café Eisheisel "In Bad Bergzabern on Liebfrauenberg." by Denise S. "My favorite spot is St. Johann in Albersweiler. From there up to the NFH at Kiesbuckel." by Michael H. "We walked to Wolfsburg in Neustadt. There are tons of chestnuts there!" by Silja "On the Kalmit. You can drive up to the parking lot and then walk to the Maria-Schutz-Kapelle (Chapel of Our Lady of Protection)." by Jacqui H. "Heidelberg Thingstätte. But put on your helmet if it's windy ;-)" by Maike B. "In Neustadt at the Sacred Heart Monastery" by Sylvia S. "In Frankweiler! On the routes of #pfalzexplore" by PFALZEXPLORE by Caught "At the Pfalzblick viewpoint in Deidesheim" by Sara "At the hikers' parking lot on the Weilach river in Bad Dürkheim - Leistadt" by Lene H. "Below Hambach Castle" by Anonymous "At the Sensental hiking parking lot near Deidesheim." by Anonymous Watch: I can't guarantee its accuracy. But nothing ventured, nothing gained! Excursions with chestnut hotspots Why not combine chestnut gathering with an outing? Here are some destinations where you can combine chestnut collecting with a day trip. I wish you lots of luck with your collecting! Pussier-Päddel The sculpture trail is lined with large chestnut trees. There are also many chestnuts to collect up the slope. Rietburg The excursion begins and ends at Villa Ludwigshöhe, and right there you'll find huge chestnut trees waiting for you. Klausental Hut From the Klausentalhütte to the Zeter Berghaus you can collect the chestnuts along the way and enjoy a magnificent view at the top. Entrance to Birkenheide At the entrance to Birkenheide, at the P&R car park, it's about a 5-minute walk into the woods. Collect chestnuts there and then visit the free wildlife park. Orensfels The path to Orensfels is challenging but absolutely packed with sweet chestnuts. My tip: Hike to Orensfels first and then collect them on the way back. Clever, right? Forest Shower Same starting point as for Orensfels – but this route is suitable for strollers. There are also many chestnut trees here, whose fruits you simply need to collect. Forest Spirits Trail On the Forest Spirits Trail in Oberotterbach, you'll find several chestnut trees along a level path. A great combination for children, of course. Föhrlenberg Part of this tour even runs along the Palatinate Chestnut Trail, and here too you will find sweet chestnut trees. However, the tour is a bit more challenging for children. To the Jung-Pfalz Hut Everything is full of chestnuts – some big, some small, all going into the collection bag. Collecting chestnuts and enjoying the playground, the best combination ever. Chestnut Adventure Trail Want to do more than just collect chestnuts? The Chestnut Adventure Trail in Leinsweiler is brand new. It's stroller-friendly and really cute! Ringelsberg Hut Those who don't want to hike the challenging trail to Orensfels will find plenty of chestnuts on the way to the Ringelsberghütte, which has a great playground. Open Sundays only! Wallberg Hut Up to the Wallberg – a hiking trail located on the edge of the Haardt Mountains leads to the Wallberg Hut. Here you'll find not only plenty of chestnuts but also fantastic hut fare. At the Bismarck Tower Park at Lindemannsruhe and you'll be surrounded by sweet chestnut trees. You can combine collecting them with a pleasant little walk to the Bismarck Tower and enjoy the view. Landeck Castle There are many sweet chestnut trees around Landeck Castle near Klingenmünster. Conquer the castle and fill your bags!

  • Aurochs tour in St. Martin

THE PERFECT ALL-ROUNDER FOR ANY WEATHER AND ANY AGE The aurochs tour is particularly versatile and therefore suitable for all weather conditions and all ages. FACTS Price: free Weather: dry weather, sunshine Age: Suitable for all age groups Location: St. Martin A well-marked, 4km long hiking trail leads around the enclosure of the wild cattle. However, you don't necessarily have to walk it. Even in bad weather, you can still manage the short distance from the parking lot to the Palatinate Forest Association's forest hut "Haus an den Fichten" for a break, and when it's dry you can either use the great playground on-site or be right at the edge of the wildlife enclosure. In good weather, there are even more options: admire the aurochs, have a picnic in the surrounding meadows, and in doing so, automatically discover the barefoot path – let's call it an "adventure trail" – at the Sandwiesenweiher pond. Anyone fancy a walk across a suspension bridge? Another place to stop for refreshments is the St. Martin barbecue hut – parking is available there, and there's also a playground. The path between the parking lot, the house by the fir trees, the barefoot path, and the St. Martin barbecue hut is accessible with a stroller or bicycle trailer. A small detour around the Sandwiesenweiher pond is necessary for this. Those who would like to learn more about the aurochs can read the information panels or book a guided hike through the St. Martin tourist information office. Have fun! • Hike to the Hohe Loog House

FAMILY-FRIENDLY TOUR FROM THE "Hahnstenschritt" CAR PARK At the finish line, a giant slide awaits the children and a cool refreshment for the adults - until then, we walk for about 45 minutes along a leisurely hiking trail with magnificent viewpoints. FACTS Price: free Weather: dry weather, sunshine Age: suitable for all age groups Location: Neustadt, starting at the Hahnenschritt parking lot The tour starts at the Hahnenschritt parking lot. We start at the "Hahnenschritt" hiking parking lot – you'll find detailed directions below. At the beginning of the trail, we immediately follow the signs to the left for "Fahrweg zum Hohe Loog Haus" – a wide hiking trail that's also easily manageable for strollers or bike trailers. You can expect an impressive view over the Palatinate Forest. Continue straight ahead until you reach a fork in the path. Important: Here, we again stay on the far left of the track! Stop for refreshments at the Hohe Loog Haus At 620 meters above sea level, we reach the managed hut of the Palatinate Forest Association, which offers numerous seats both inside and out. A huge playground awaits children, featuring a natural adventure area, a giant slide, a trampoline, climbing frames, and swings. Even toddlers have their own swing set. With or without a stroller? Once we reach the top, we can now enjoy the view of the Rhine plain. Those hiking without a stroller can also take the more direct route. This is signposted from the "Hahnenschritt" parking lot and goes directly into the forest to the right of the road. Impressions More information All information regarding opening hours, menu and current news can be found here: The Hohe Loog House can also be reached via a beautiful hiking trail from Hambach Castle. However, the approximately 8km long route is steep and only manageable for experienced hikers of school age.

  • Hike to the Ringelsberg Hut

FAMILY HIKING TRAIL WITH SUN TERRACE AND PLAYGROUND A bit of forest, a cabin and a playground - the path to the sun-drenched Ringelsberg cabin offers a great Sunday hike! FACTS Price: free Weather: dry weather Age: Suitable for all ages Location: Frankweiler Only on Sundays and public holidays The Ringelsberghütte, with its sun terrace, is situated at an altitude of approximately 480 meters. It is open exclusively on Sundays and public holidays and is managed by volunteers from the PWV Frankweiler. Short but steep path The ascent to the hut from the large hikers' parking lot is about 2 kilometers long. You walk up a fairly wide hiking trail, which I wouldn't recommend for a stroller due to the steepness. However, you do occasionally see bicycle trailers being pushed up the 130 meters of elevation gain. The trail leads you along the top of the Frankweiler quarry and offers beautiful views of the Rhine plain. The trail is well signposted. Perfect Sunday outing Once you reach the top, you'll find a great sun terrace, the cheapest spritzer prices far and wide in a truly rustic hut, and a nice playground for the children. The cabin offers some seating both inside and out – but on really nice days, there can be a bit of a wait for food. On the plus side, you can enjoy a great view, and the kids will love the slide and the wooden truck that everyone wants to drive. Extensions: Do you love great views? Orensfels is just a short distance away. The path winds its way uphill to this viewpoint. You can find the tour description here: Also nearby, and suitable as a side trip on summer days, is the path to the forest shower in Gleisweiler. The tour description is here: * Unpaid advertising - I received no compensation for this report. Impressions More information Website of the Ringelsberg Hut:

  • Trekking in the Palatinate

WARNING: TREKKING IS ADDICTIVE "I don't dare..." - I hear this statement very often when we talk about our last trekking adventure in the Palatinate with the children. With this account of my experience, I want to dispel any apprehension and encourage you to take this risk - with your children, friends or strangers. OUT OF THE COMFORT ZONE AND INTO ADVENTURE! In the Palatinate Forest, overnight stays are officially permitted at 15 designated sites, known as trekking camps. Here, you can pitch your tent for one night and then either move on to the next site or return home. Trekking spots are now in high demand and weekends are quickly booked up. You can conveniently book and pay for your spot online for your desired date via the website of the Southern Wine Route Association (Südliche Weinstraße eV): www.trekking-pfalz.de Each trekking site has capacity for 4 small tents, a fire pit and a toilet – however, the condition of the sites varies. Sites in Vorderweidenthal, Annweiler or Kalmit are particularly popular. Only after booking will you find out the exact location of the campsite and receive directions. Those traveling with children should contact the team at Südliche Weinstraße eV in advance to inquire about campsites that are within easy walking distance. All campsites must be reached on foot and are not accessible by car or public transport. Of course – you want to get out into the wilderness, where the foxes and hedgehogs say goodnight to each other. And such an adventure is of course much more fun in a group - the children play together and the adults hold the children's sticks for roasting bread on sticks over the campfire - yes, that's how it is! For those wanting to hike from one trekking site to another – a true trekking tour – the best option with children is to hike from site 3 to site 4. Start in Annweiler with a detour to Trifels Castle at site 3, and continue to site 4 the following day. The distances are short, and Annweiler itself offers good food options, including the Barbarossa restaurant, the climbers' hut, and delicious ice cream parlors, even though fires are not permitted. EATING WHILE TREKKING Speaking of campfire bread - what do people usually eat while trekking? This depends entirely on whether there is a risk of forest fires at that time – because then the rule is: no fire and no cooking. So you should decide on the menu spontaneously. We had sausages skewered on sticks and scored at the end, bread on sticks made from ready-made frozen pizza dough (which is super easy to transport and wrap perfectly around the stick), and for dessert marshmallows, also from a stick. For breakfast I baked a loaf cake – dm sells sets of three cake tins that are great for transporting. I also had tea, water or hot chocolate (tip: pack the powder very well!) and milk, which is also available in smaller pouches. Also very important: Plan for plenty of water. Most campsites don't have a water source nearby, and you underestimate how much additional water you'll need: brushing your teeth, making tea, preparing food, washing, and well, how many cups will inevitably be spilled – oops! It's best to take the rest of your food and your rubbish into your tent to avoid tempting wild boars and other animals. EQUIPMENT FOR TREKKING WITH CHILDREN Tent, flashlight - what do I need for an overnight stay in the forest? Actually, not that much – because you have to carry it all yourselves! Phew... but I have a few tips and a free packing list/checklist for you to download for trekking with (small) children: Important: Make sure you have enough warm clothing – there's hardly anything worse than freezing children on a trek. Pack spare clothes in clear zip-top bags – that way you can quickly see what's inside and, most importantly, the clothes won't get damp! Thanks to Flo for this survival tip! Also: Watch out for ticks – take insect repellent with you, because there are mosquitoes too! Our first-aid kit has also come in handy for the occasional plaster – luckily we've never needed anything more. Oh, and I never take toys with me – the children are so busy in the woods collecting firewood, whittling sticks, setting up the tent, and exploring their surroundings that they don't need anything else. The exception is a small picture book for bedtime stories – that's a must for us. Here are 10 tips for trekking with children - including a packing list and equipment tips: THE THING WITH THE TOILET There are plenty of quiet places in the forest - but at the trekking sites there's one with a heart! The campsites usually have composting toilets. The stylish wooden building with a door is always positioned away from the trekking site – so you can leave the door open. The composting toilet is essentially a compost heap. After use, take a scoop of litter (located in the bucket next to the toilet) and throw it on top. Use toilet paper sparingly, as it decomposes more slowly. The toilet is a whole adventure in itself for the children: "Why isn't there a sink?", "Where does the poop go?", "Why does it smell so bad in here?" - Yes, it's not exactly pleasant. But it's okay for one night. Make sure the toilet lid is closed, otherwise the composting process won't work. With the last outhouse we used, we even had a small rain barrel. Apparently, there are even outhouses with solar lighting – what a luxury! ;-) Dare to! Conclusion: Stepping out of your comfort zone will put you in a new time zone! After the harsh restrictions of the pandemic, this break will completely slow you down. Lose the sense of deadlines, time, or quickly doing things on the side – after this time, we all deserve it, our children most of all! And you'll be their heroes, whether you lit the campfire with a whetstone or biodegradable firelighters. You don't need a bushcraft workshop to spend a night under the stars—just the courage to call your friends and arrange a date! Have fun and feel free to send me a picture! I'm eager to hear how your adventure went! • Mini-Jump in the trampoline park

LETTING OUT AT FUNPARK KAISERSLAUTERN DURING MINI-JUMP TIME Jumping around wildly? Really letting loose? Giving free rein to your urge to move even in the rain and then falling into bed tired at night? FACTS Price: €24 for 60 minutes for 1 adult and 2 kids at Mini-Jump including socks (Further prices available directly from the fun park) Weather: all weather Age: For children aged 1-6 years Location: Kaiserslautern In the trampoline hall in Kaiserslautern, toddlers aged 1 to 6 have the entire trampoline park to themselves during the Mini-Jump. Perfect bad weather outing Outside it's stormy and the rain is lashing against the windows, but inside the kids are running around wildly. We had a blast at the Kaiserslautern fun park. Off to the mini-jump! Normally, toddlers aren't allowed in the jump parks. The other jumpers are obviously much more boisterous and should also be able to have fun without constantly having to be considerate. Fortunately, there's a mini-jump on two days a week. On Wednesday and Saturday mornings, the trampoline park is reserved for the youngest children, giving them a safe space to let loose. Full throttle into the foam cubes We had a real blast there for an hour: from simply jumping on slanted trampolines and ball-throwing trampolines to diving onto the air cushion, and our absolute highlight – jumping from the trampoline into the foam cubes. Sore muscles come free of charge! You can also try out the accompanying ninja obstacle course. The pictures give you an idea of the different areas in the trampoline park. Everything was spotlessly clean and in excellent condition. There's also a changing table for little ones and a separate toddler area in the hall that's always available. I found it pleasantly busy, even though our time slot was fully booked, and we were able to try everything we wanted. We managed to try everything in 60 minutes; next time we'll book the 120-minute package. It was a fantastic outing for us. And here's how it works: It's best to book your tickets in advance. Slots fill up quickly in bad weather. For your visit, you book a fixed time slot (60 or 120 minutes) which cannot be changed. Therefore, it's best to arrive a little early to check in and change. For the trampoline park you need special jumping socks from the fun park - these cost €2.50 and can then be reused. Long trousers protect against minor injuries. One adult can supervise two children. Changing rooms and lockers are available in the hall. It's best to have a €1 coin ready. Included in the price for us were a Capri-Sun or Hohes C juice pouch for the kids and a hot drink for the adults. That was really great and made our trip perfect. There are also snacks, ice cream, and drinks available on-site, which you can enjoy at the tables. You need a consent form, also for minors. You can fill this out online in advance. Where are there trampoline parks in the Palatinate region and surrounding areas? There are of course other jump parks in the Palatinate region - here's a list and the minimum age for jumping: Funpark Kaiserslautern , suitable for ages 3 and up (except for the Mini-Jump, which is suitable for ages 1 and up) Funpark Landau , from 6 years old (up to 8 years old only when accompanied by an adult) Jump Indoorwelt Neustadt, currently closed due to the pandemic Jump Arena Kaiserslautern, from 3 years old (up to 7 years old only when accompanied by an adult) Jump4all Ladenburg, from 3 years old when accompanied by an adult Ludwigshafen Jump Park : From 5 years old when accompanied by an adult. Saturday and Sunday mornings: Kids jump for children aged 2-7. *Unpaid advertisement - I received no compensation for this report. All information is provided without guarantee. • Taking the Stumpfwaldbahn railway through the forest

HISTORIC FIELD RAILWAY NEAR RAMSEN AM EISWOOG Toot-toot - it rattles on the rails and steam rises from the chimney as the Stumpfwaldbahn railway climbs the hills at Eiswoog. FACTS Price: 12 € for the family ticket, plus €2.50 if traveling by steam locomotive. Weather: all weather conditions (steam locomotives must not be used when there is a risk of forest fires) Age: any age Location: Ramsen - Eiswoog The Eiswoog near Ramsen is in itself a beautiful destination for a day trip - especially in summer, when you can dip your feet in the lake and go rowing. One tour please From May onwards, the Stumpfwaldbahn, a historic narrow-gauge railway, also runs here every Sunday. Eiswoog station is located directly on the main road. You can park in the large parking lot next to it. Please refer to the Stumpfwaldbahn website for exact departure times. The railway is operated entirely by volunteers. Route Sometimes a diesel locomotive, sometimes a steam locomotive pulls the passenger carriages through the forest on the approximately 4-kilometer stretch to Ramsen. Ramsen station is the terminus of the line. You can buy a ticket for a one-way trip or a round-trip ticket. Those who only take the one-way route can walk back along the tracks to Eiswoog and may then encounter the next train rattling along the tracks in the forest. I recommend taking the train there and back. The whole trip takes about 45 minutes and leads through a shady forest. Please note that the steam locomotive emits soot, which can sometimes get on your clothes or face – a real Jim Button experience! Hiking at Eiswoog Those who would like to do some hiking can also do so at the Eiswoog lake. An accessible hiking trail circles the lake. You can easily reach the Eiswoog and the swimming area with a stroller or balance bike. *Unpaid advertisement - I received no compensation for this report.
